6 Tips for a Stellar Dating Profile

So, you’ve joined a couple of dating apps or considering joining your first. When it comes to online dating, creating your profile is an art. You want your profile to reflect who you are and enticing enough that people want to get to know you. If you’re crafting your first dating profile or trying to improve your chances of finding a match, here are some tips for a stellar dating profile.

Choose the right platform

When it comes to dating apps, not all are created equal. Each dating app offers unique features and attracts different groups of people. Additionally, each app has its reputation, and it’s necessary to consider it when selecting an app for your dating profile. For example, Tinder is infamously known as an app for hookups. While it is possible to find matches looking for relationships on Tinder, it might be best to choose another app if that isn’t what you’re looking for. On the other hand, Bumble allows female users to make the first move and has a reputation for more authentic connections.

Depending on what you’re looking for, browse to see which platform is the most suitable for your needs. Some popular dating apps include the ones we mentioned like Tinder and Bumble, but check out others like Clover, Hinge, OKCupid, eHarmony, and Plenty of Fish. Each platform caters to different sets of people, from different age groups, sexual preferences, interests, and more.

Select images carefully

Pictures say a thousand words, and this is true, especially with dating profiles. When it comes to selecting photos for your profile, choose wisely. Your images should display what you currently look like, not what you looked like ten years ago. Additionally, your images should tell a story about who you are. Don’t just post selfies as this won’t attract the right attention or leave people a positive idea of who you are because you’ll come across as egocentric or too into yourself. Instead, select images of you doing things you enjoy or an image with your pet. Your pictures say a lot about you, so ensure you’re sending the right message with your images.

Additionally, select multiple images, not just one. This will give people an idea of what you look like from numerous perspectives and makes you appear more trustable. There’s a lot of sketchiness that comes with online dating, so you want to ensure you’re presenting yourself as an actual person on the other end of the screen and not some scammer or catfish. Depending on the dating app and users, some people won’t even check out your bio, so your images are your next best bet to showing a little about yourself.

Be specific in your bio

After your images, the next thing people will check out on your dating profile is your user bio. Depending on the platform, you might be able to write a short biography or select interests and information offered by the platform. For example, Bumble provides interesting questionnaires regarding interests like your favorite book, a movie character you identify with, and more. While you want your bio to have relevant information about yourself, select what you reveal carefully. You should include interests in your bio to attract someone with similar hobbies or interests. Your bio should have enough information about you, but not too much that no one reads it. Bios also serve as a way for others to break the ice in their initial message to you, so try to insert some conversation topics.

Within your bio section, you should also provide information about what you’re looking for and your intentions with using a dating app. Are you looking for a relationship? Or how about just a casual hookup? Or are you even looking for new friends or a third for your relationship? Whatever you’re looking for,  mention it in your ‘about me’ section. This can avoid heartache for both you and others and assist you in finding what you’re looking for.

Use humor

Humor is a great way to attract others. People want to surround themselves with people who can laugh, so showing your humor in your profile is a great way to show you’re fun to be around. Humans consistently rank humor as an important trait in a partner. However, when it comes to dating profiles, be careful about how you try to make people laugh. While being sarcastic or self-deprecating can make others laugh, it doesn’t always leave people with the right impression. Additionally, jokes that may be offensive to groups of people have no place in a public dating profile and may get you quickly kicked off an app if someone reports you. To add some humor to your dating profile, insert a funny picture or two of yourself. Or insert a joke into your bio section.

Leave a bit of mystery

While you want your bio to provide enough information to get a sense of who you are, avoid writing your life story. Remember you’re not looking for a business partner, so they don’t need to know everything there is to know about you before they’ve even decided to match with you!

By leaving a bit of mystery in your dating profile, you entice others to want to learn more. Don’t include any negativity or false information in your profile, because this will certainly catch up to you.

Get a friend to look it over

When in doubt, phone a friend. Before you officially send off your profile to be seen by the public, have a friend look it over. A friend can tell you whether your pictures are an accurate portrayal of what you look like. Additionally, they can tell you whether your bio is a solid reflection of you as a person. If you’ve left anything out that may be important for your profile, a friend will be sure to point it out.

Get Dating

When it comes to dating apps, what matters most is you represent yourself authentically. Whatever your goal is out of your dating profile, it’s important to set and share those intentions with the people you meet. Additionally, by sharing a bit about yourself and using multiple, recent images, you make it easier to find the people you’re looking for. So get writing, take some photos, and get a friend to edit your work. Happy dating!
