How to Choose a Concealer for Your Face

Concealer is a popular product that is used to cover dark circles, redness, or to correct various pigments in the skin. But how much do you really need? How should you think about choosing your color? Should it be applied before or after foundation? Don’t be scared – we will help you with all these questions and extra tips!

If you look at today’s video guides and gurus on youtube it is difficult to miss the concealer. It is used under the eyes, in the forehead, on the chin, and under the nose in thick layers that are buffed out with a sponge in layers in layers.

And of course, you can put your concealer as you please. However, if we think from a makeup artist’s perspective, you may not even need a concealer. But how do you know?

First of all, it’s up to you. There is nothing wrong with liking a hard make-up expression. But if you are looking for a natural result that does not feel heavy on your face, it may be good to think about what products you use, and how much of each you need to achieve the desired result. If you already have a covering foundation that hides what you want to be hidden then you may not need additional products. If you want to brighten up some batches, a powder can suffice. However, if you like lighter makeup, a concealer may be the only product you need, plus a little fixing to keep it in place.

Skin tone is also something to keep in mind. While light skin generally needs more coverage, dark skin may need color correction. Therefore, concealer is usually applied before the foundation on dark skin and after foundation on light skin. This is because on dark skin you need to lighten up some areas before you apply your foundation, and on light skin, you need to see how much coverage your foundation provides before adding additional layers.

How to choose a concealer

When choosing a concealer color it is important to keep in mind what to use it for.
If you are just looking for extra coverage, you can bet on a color that matches your skin tone, or the foundation you usually use.
If you want to brighten up certain areas of the face, you can choose a concealer that is one or two shades lighter than your foundation.

If you want to cover colored parts, for example, a red pimple or some other pigmented problem then you may need a concealer with a specific undertone. For example, red pigments are best covered by green pigments.
Color neutralization is a big part of choosing a concealer if you don’t just want some extra coverage. One tip is to search the “color circle” and check which colors are opposite each other to see which undertone neutralizes which problem.
In other words – a concealer with:

  • green undertones neutralize a red problem, such as a pimple or redness on the cheeks
… Orange / apricot undertones remove blue-tinted darkness around eyes (or grayish areas on darker complexion)
… Yellow undertones neutralize purple veins or thin skin around the eyes
… Pink undertones remove yellow pigment spots

Concealers are often creamy in texture, so it may be good to get a fixing powder that you can use in the areas where the concealer has been applied. You do this to avoid the product from folding on your face, and to keep it in place throughout the day.
For best results, smooth out the concealer with a brush or sponge first, and then apply your powder to fix.
